In this course we will discuss the definition of species and why species determination is necessary in a whole range of contexts. The focus will be on metal(loid) containing species and their determination by elemental methods in combination with separation methods.

The main questions discussed on some examples (mainly arsenic and mercury species) will be:

What type of species can be determined by these techniques? What are the requirements that a species can be detected reliably? Why is speciation necessary? What techniques are available for separation and detection? Where are the strengths and weaknesses of the different techniques? How to set-up an experiment from start to end delivering reliable quantitative data?
