Microwave induced plasma (MIP) technology has significantly evolved in recent years and thereby, analytical figures of merit afforded by this type of discharges for a wide number of elements in optical emission and mass spectrometry are on a par with those afforded by inductively coupled plasma (ICP). As a result, MIP instrumentation is now available in the market by different companies, mainly because they offer a significant reduction in operating costs regarding ICPs due to the use of nitrogen as the plasma gas instead of argon. This technology can be now applied to the elemental analysis of complex samples in many fields (e.g., petrochemical, environmental, food, etc.) at trace and ultra-trace levels. This course is designed to review the state of the art of microwave plasma technology for real sample analysis with special emphasis on instrument optimization, analytical figures of merit, matrix effects and current applications. Finally, the session will be concluded with a discussion of strengths and weakness of MIPs regarding ICPs.
