This short course focuses on the latest developments in isotopic fractionation and mass bias correction models for the accurate and precise determination of both absolute and delta isotope ratios by MC-ICP-MS. In addition to the well-known phenomenon of mass-dependent fractionation (MDF), the recognition and reporting of mass-independent fractionation (MIF) within MC-ICP-MS have significantly increased over the past few decades.
MIF has a substantial impact on the selection of isotopic fractionation correction models, as using mass-dependent models to correct for instrumental bias in isotopes exhibiting mass-independent fractionation can result in skewed isotope amount ratios. This course will cover the implications of MIF on several popular mass bias correction models, delve into the core concepts and assumptions of each model, evaluate their pros and cons, and discuss the practical aspects of isotope amount ratio measurements [1-2]. Additionally, examples of the production of isotopic Certified Reference Materials (iCRMs) at NRC will be provided.
